A drug to fall in love - fiction or soon reality?

Scientists are on a new mission: Discovering the secrets of love. Psychologists in human behaviour believe that it is only a matter of time before falling in love is just divided in a series of biological processes that can be imitated or activated perfectly with a drug.

Not yet
Does this mean that the clumsy loveletters, brave efforts to write a poem or thoughtful glances are coming to an end? We're not there yet, because the mysterie of love has not (yet) been unraveled. If it happens though, a lovedrug will not let us wait that long is what Professor Larry Young states.

Oxytocine
The first segment is already known: the oxytocine hormone, better known as the cuddling hormone. This hormone has an important role in getting attached to a person, it helps building trust and it reduces feelings of fear. It is also released when giving birth so that the mother can feed her child naturally and as such form a strong relation with her child.
People that have a lof of oxytocine by nature are gullible and spend more money on others. They're also better at assessing the other's feelings and are less sensitive for shyness and any phobia.

Better in arguing
Prozac and Viagra increase the level of oxytocien in the body, but so far there are no studies known that there is any influence on a relation when taking these medicin. A spray that contains oxytocine even lets couples argue better.

At least, that is what those couples pretended themselves. The real effects of the spray are still under research. Professor Young is already convinced that the spray increases faith. "However, I would not spend my money on it yet", the academic said.

Genes
A second important factor to solve the mysterie of love is genetic. Having long, loving relationships or never have been the lucky dog in love is written (partially) in your genes.

Less marriages
Men with the so called "love ratio gen" have less chance to get married, even if they have a partner and kids and live together for many years. If they do marry, then there is a much higher chance that that marriage will be difficult and a divorce may not be far away. The gen suppresses the vasopressing hormone.

"Perhaps in the near future, a genetic test is available for partners to check how 'compatible' they are. That test then could help us to find the right partner."

Excuse
The question whether we like that or not remains. Such a test will prove that a man probably will cheat on you or that he is not ready to get into a long term relationship. But that does not guarantee that that is going to happen. On the other side, it is an easy excuse ofcourse .... "I'm sorry honey, it's just in my genes!"
