Coffee shops turning into dating joints

Gone are the days when coffee shops were used extensively by artists, intellectuals, merchants and bankers for having discussions on various socio-political issues. But nowadays, these shops have become the favourite haunt for dating couples.

Just make a stroll to any such coffee shops, you will find a number of young couples sitting close to each other and having some romantic chit-chat.

"The original feel of cafes is lost which housed newspapers and magazines that rejuvenated the sippers and also had ludo, chess, and carrom boards to tickle your grey cells as well as to entertain you," said Praful Shah, a textile industrialist.

He further said, "Earlier, there was a café named, Coffee Culture, on Ghoddod Road which had this kind of arrangement. I used to go there at least once in a week from my hectic schedule and gulped in a hot cappuccino and read magazines. But now I feel out of place."

"Coffee houses largely serve as centres of social interaction. The coffee house provides social members with a place to congregate, talk, write, read and entertain one another, or pass time, whether individually or in groups."

But Meerani Patel, a student, has a different point of view to share with. "No more books or mind jamming games when I am having a coffee with my friends."

Pinky Chaudhry, another student, while supporting Meerani, said, "Confined in the four walls of the classroom and tuition class, evenings are just meant for fun and refreshing our nerves while sipping a chilled coffee."

"Today, the idea of a coffee house usually brings to mind a cozy place that serves coffee and espresso drinks, with couches to lounge in while you sip,” says Dr Apurva Gandhi, adding that let us be a part of this new coffee culture and vapourise all our day's tension with a cup o' coffee.
